Benefits of Facial Extractions for Clearer-Looking Skin

Clogged pores are one of the most common concerns I see, and one of the most satisfying to address. I have practiced as a licensed esthetician in the US since 1991, and professional extractions, also called deep pore cleansing, remain a core part of my work. Here are the benefits of facial extractions, how I do them, and how to keep your skin looking clear afterward.

What Are Facial Extractions?

Facial extractions are the manual clearing of blackheads and built-up debris from congested pores. The skin is first softened so the pores release their contents comfortably, and each pore is then cleared individually.

Done by a trained professional, the result is skin that looks cleaner and feels smoother. Squeezing at home is a different story: pressure in the wrong place can leave marks and make congestion look worse.

My Method: By Hand, Without Metal Tools

I do not use metal comedone extractors. Every blackhead is cleared manually, with my own method refined since 1991. Working by hand lets me feel exactly how much pressure the skin needs and stop the moment a pore is clear.

Whiteheads and milia are different, and I do not extract them. They sit under a closed surface, and forcing them out is how skin gets marked. I address them with a separate, precise approach using sterile single-use applicators, and I finish with high frequency, a classic step in professional skincare.

When I Do Not Do Extractions

If you have active acne, my answer is no. Pressing on inflamed skin can spread the problem and make it look worse. For skin with active breakouts I recommend a customized peel instead. I choose the peel for the stage your skin is in, never one formula for everyone.

Why Extractions Are Easier After Microdermabrasion

When microdermabrasion comes first, extractions become gentler and more effective. Microdermabrasion lifts away the dry, dead surface cells that sit over congested pores, so the skin is softer and the pores release their contents with far less pressure.

But not all microdermabrasion is the same. Many machines use a diamond-tip wand that simply buffs the surface by friction. The method I use is crystal microdermabrasion: a fine stream of aluminum oxide crystals combined with a suction probe, which exfoliates and lifts at the same time. My ABRALASE + VACUSOUND is a Class II medical device I have worked with since being one of the earliest practitioners to bring it to the US.

Just as not every car on the road is a luxury car, not every microdermabrasion machine delivers the same experience. This October, my microdermabrasion https://www.biotecusa.com/services is $140, a complete facial with extractions if needed.

Benefits of Facial Extractions After 30

From our thirties onward, skin tends to renew itself more slowly. Pores can look larger and the surface can look dull or uneven. Professional extractions help with the look of all three:

  • Smoother-looking texture: clearing congested pores leaves the surface feeling even and refined.

  • Clearer-looking pores: blackheads are removed instead of covered up.

  • A brighter complexion: skin free of surface buildup reflects light better.

  • A better base for your products: serums and creams spread evenly and absorb well on clean skin.

  • No picking at home: leaving extractions to a professional helps you avoid marks from squeezing.

What to Expect During Your Session

My Facial with Extractions takes 60 minutes:

  1. Cleansing chosen for your skin type.

  2. Youth-Glow 24 Enzyme mask with rice powder and Arctic berries (sea buckthorn and cloudberry). It lifts dead surface cells and softens the skin so pores can be cleared comfortably.

  3. Manual extractions, pore by pore.

  4. Pure rose water to refresh the skin.

  5. A no-rinse, complete absorption mask to hydrate and leave skin looking calm and balanced.

The cleansing, steaming, and masking are very relaxing, and some clients fall asleep. LED is available as an optional add-on.

How Much Do Facial Extractions Cost?

Prices vary by city and by provider. At BIOTEC USA, the 60-minute Facial with Extractions is currently $180. Every session is done by me personally, with products I formulate myself.

How Often Should You Have Extractions?

Less often than most people think. When extractions are done properly and you use clean, non-comedogenic products at home, you do not need them every month. I suggest once per season, four times a year.

How to Care for Your Skin After Extractions

  • Keep your routine gentle for the first day or two, with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser.

  • Do not pick or squeeze between visits.

  • Choose non-comedogenic makeup and skincare.

  • Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day.

My two soaps for after extractions. Both the Vegan Soap and the Seaweed Soap are pH-balanced to about 6, gentle on the skin’s natural, slightly acidic balance, so they cleanse without that tight, stripped feeling. The Seaweed Soap is made with finely crushed blue algae that gently exfoliate as you wash, plus probiotic powder to help keep the skin’s surface looking clear and balanced. After washing, skin looks soft and milky-smooth: a simple daily step that helps keep the results of your extraction facial looking fresh between visits.
